One of the hottest items this year for gift-giving was some form or e-Reader. The Metro Library Network (MLN) which consists of the Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, and Marion Libraries offer free downloadable eBooks (and Audiobooks) to library card holders through the OverDrive network.
To download an eBook to your device, visit your library website and click on the link to Search OVERDRIVE. At the OverDrive website you can checkout and download Adobe EPUB eBooks, Adobe PDF eBooks, OverDrive WMA Audiobooks and OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks. All you need is a valid library card, internet access, a computer or device that meets the system requirements for the type of material you wish to download, and free software for the computer or device on which you wish to use the materials.
There are a number of devices compatible with the OverDrive materials, and you can find the complete list here. Please note: OverDrive is not currently compatible with the Amazon Kindle.
The first step to getting free eBooks from the MLN is to download and install the free software that allows you to enjoy the materials you want. For Adobe eBooks on your computer, you need to download Adobe Digital Editions. For Adobe EPUP eBooks on Android or iPhone devices, you need OverDrive Media Console v2.0 or newer.
To download OverDrive titles, you need OverDrive Media Console. OverDrive Media Console is available for :
- Android v1.5 (or newer)
- BlackBerry v4.5 (or newer)
- iPhone® OS v4.0 (or newer)
- Mac OS® v10.4.9 (or newer)
- Windows® 98 SE (or newer)
- Windows Mobile® 5 and 6
Activate the software and make sure you have any necessary updates.
Now you are ready to search the catalog, download your titles, and enjoy! When you find a title you’re interested in, add it to the Cart and check it out. Once you have checked out a title, a download page is displayed. Click the ‘Download’ link to start the download. When the download is complete, open and enjoy the title.
You will never accrue late fees with titles you download from this website. Titles expire at the end of the loan period, and they are automatically returned to the library. You can check out up to four titles at a time. For more information on the borrowing titles, click here.
If a title is not currently available, you can place it on hold. You can even suggest titles that aren’t currently offered by adding items to your “wish list.”
There is more information on downloading eBooks (and Audiobooks) from OverDrive available on their website. The staff at the Library is happy to help assist you with as much as possible so that you can start enjoying your new eReader!
