Library a Go Go

When you think of vending machines, it’s rare you think of anything good for you. Often it is candy, soda, or coffee you imagine filling the wire traps. Imagine if you could flip through the contents of a vending machine and get a library book. With the invention of automated kiosks like this, that is actually possible.

The Contra Costa Libraries (San Francisco Bay area) have been using automated kiosks, a service they call “Library a Go Go,” since 2008. This service consists of placing automated library kiosks in busy transit stations throughout the county. When they began using this service, library card demand went up dramatically.

These kiosks can be one way in which libraries can reach out to the community at any time of day, any day of the week. In Europe, libraries often have such kiosks built into the exterior of the library so that patrons can use the library when it is convenient for them–no matter the time.
