Along with the destruction of the main library building, the loss of two-thirds of the collection in the flood of 2008 was tremendously devastating to the staff of the Cedar Rapids Public Library. While the building construction project continues to progress, the collection development team at the CRPL have been working for months to develop the opening day collection. This collection of books, cds, dvds, magazines, and misc materials will be between 200,000 and 225,000 items. The process to build this collection involves a variety of staff at the library and a team of professionals at Baker and Taylor, the book distributor involved in this project.
A milestone was reached this week with the loading of the first pallet of books for the new Cedar Rapids Public Library. The books won’t arrive for months, coming in on trucks to be placed onto the shelves in the new building. But with more than 200 more pallets left to fill, the teams are underway prepping the books for our library with the appropriate RFID tags, stickers and covers. Each pallet will be stored for us at their location in Momence, Illinois, until the new library is ready to welcome them.
